A Spoken Tutorial is a ten minute long audio-video tutorial, created for self learning through a design process. The spoken tutorial methodology has been developed by Dr. Kannan Moudgalya to promote educational, scientific and engineering software and to improve information technology (IT) literacy, all using open source software, thereby, enhancing the employment potential. The tutorials have also been dubbed into 22 Indian languages there by being able to reach a wide audience.

The Spoken Tutorial approach has helped train 26 lakh college students in India on various topics, with 16 lakh being trained in the year 2016 alone. A main benefit of using spoken tutorials is the improved self-confidence, which comes with self learning. This methodology is currently being incorporated into the syllabus of many universities and colleges. Spoken Tutorials are now used offline in about 20,000 lab courses in more than 3,000 colleges all over India, as a part of their curriculum.

Spoken Tutorials are funded by the National Mission on Education through ICT (NMEICT), MHRD, and are available free of cost making them the largest collection of IT training material, accessible to even non English speakers of all ages. Anyone can create a Spoken Tutorial, learn by themselves using Spoken Tutorial, and also conduct Spoken Tutorial based training programmes.

The talk will present an approach to improve the modelling and simulation ethos in the country, by focusing on chemical process simulation, and how it will be useful to the profession and the industry.
