Changes to DNS at IMSc

ccm, imsc, sysadmin [link] [comments ()] [raw]

The following summarises the changes made to the nameservers over the last week. It is long because of explanations which are at the end.

  1. The file imsc:/var/named/named.conf contains the configuration for our primary name server imsc.ernet.in (202.41.95.1).

  2. The file imsc:/var/named/202.41.95/imsc.rev contains the list of all our machines with address under the 202.41.95.* numbering scheme.1

  3. The files imsc:/var/named/imsc.ernet.in/soa.zone is the Start Of Authority file for the imsc.ernet.in zone --- it includes all the other files in the directory imsc:/var/named/imsc.ernet.in/* .2

  4. The secondary name servers listed in the soa.zone files for imsc.ernet.in and 202.41.95 are called ns1.imsc.ernet.in and ns2.imsc.ernet.in these are given IP addresses ns1 202.41.95.95 and 202.54.63.37 ns2 202.41.95.75 and 202.54.63.38 we should not change these "ever".3

  5. The files in the directory imsc:/var/named/imsc.ernet.in/* are called servers.zone, hosts.zone, access.zone, office.zone, library.zone, periph.zone and xterm.zone. The new machines added to the network should be added in the appropriate file.4

  6. The servers.zone lists (by service name) the IP addresses or the canonical names of the machines providing the service.5 This file should not be changed.

  1. The file imsc:/var/named/202.41.95/soa.zone needs to be edited everytime we add a new machine to our network (also remember to increment the serial number at the top of the file). For convenience the numbers assigned are listed in numerical order.

  2. imsc:/var/named/imsc.ernet.in/soa.zone must be modified (by changing the serial number) whenever any of the files in its directory are changed.

  3. If new machines are to be used in place of imsc4 and gulmohar for this purpose then those machines should be given the numbers for ns1 and ns2.

  4. imsc:/var/named/imsc.ernet.in/soa.zone must be modified (by changing the serial number) whenever any of the files in its directory are changed.

  5. Since we do not have direct control over the VSNL reverse lookup the service based IP addressing scheme (rather than host based addressing scheme) is forced on us for all services that have an external face (www,DNS,mail, proxy, xxx, ftp etc). This means that when a host stops providing a particular service it must give up its IP address to the machine that replaces it.
