My Research

Astrophysics:

A major portion of my research deals with the properties of quark matter at very high density and consequences thereof for astrophysical objects, such as neutron stars. This is an exciting and current field of research, both theoretically and observationally. Quark matter at high density behaves like a superfluid and in some cases, as a superconductor, with many complex phases and associated phenomena. Observations of neutron stars and modern nuclear physics experiments (and even experiments with cold atoms in the lab!) are revealing new ways to test our understanding of dense matter, bringing together several different fields of research. Ultimately, this inter-discplinary work is what makes this field so exciting today.

For Students:

I am happy to discuss my research and offer projects for you to work on. If you are interested in the physics of dense quark matter, neutrinos in astrophysics or neutron stars, I have (a finite number of) "ready-made" projects for you. If you are interested in the physics of nucleosynthesis, of ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions, cold atoms or projects of a computational nature, I can construct projects for you. In both cases, you will learn a lot!
