It is with deep sadness that we convey the news that Professor C. V. Vishveshwara passed away on January 16, 2017. He was 78.

A pioneer in black hole physics with several seminal early contributions to the subject, notably the prediction of the ring down signal of a black hole merger, he also had an active involvement with the IAGRG over the past decades. He was its President during 1984 - 1986. He was one of the organizers of the ICGC meetings of 1987 and 1991. He delivered the Vaidya-Raychaudhuri Endowment Award lecture in 1996. Many of the GR community will remember his delightful cartoons and after dinner talks at the various meetings. He will be missed.

The IAGRG Council expresses its deepest condolences to his family.

We thank Prof. Naresh Dadhich and Bala Iyer for the obituary.
