Abstract:
The Workshop on Mathematics of Computer Algorithms, held at the Institute of Mathematical Sciences, Madras, from
May 7-15, 1986, marks the commencement of Computer Science activity at this Institute. It's origin can be traced to a meeting
arranged by Prof.E.C.G.Sudarshan, Director of the Institute of Mathematical Sciences, on Jan.l and 2, 1985. Those present on
that occasion were : Fields Medalist Prof. D.Mumford, Professor R. Narasimhan (TIFR), Prof.S.Ramani,(TIFR), Prof.N.Balasubramanian
(Joint Cipher-Bureau, New Delhi), Prof.N.Mahabala(IIT, Madras),
Prof.S.V.Rangaswamy(I.I.Sc.), Prof.B.Venkatachalam(Anna Univ.
Madras), Dr.C.E.Veni Madhavan(I.I.Sc.), Prof.Rani Siromoney,(Madras Christian College), Prof.G.Bhamathi(Madras Univ.),
Dr. Geetha Srinivasa Rao (Ramanujan Inst., Madras) and from the Institute: Prof.E.C.G.Sudarshan, Prof.G.Rajasekaran,
Prof.C.S.Seshadri and Dr.K.Srinivasa Rao, The discussions were on Artificial Intelligence and Computer Science and the final recommendation made at the end of the two-day meeting was that Theoretical Ccmputer Science should be pursued at the Institute, in the first instance. The conference theme broadly covered the topics under the four headings: A. Algebraic and Analytic Number Theory, B. Algorithmic Combinatorics, C. Graph Theory and Algorithms, D. Anaysis of Algorithms and Complexity Theory. Some additional topics - (section E): 'parallelism in Computer
Science', 'Theory and practice of Computer Science', 'Multiplex Algorithm', 'Distributed Algorithms for Graph Problems', and 'Mathematical Reasoning Vs. Computer Algorithms', were also covered at the Workshop, and a few papers were presented.
