A four day symposium on Mathematics in Social, Economic and Life Sciences was conducted by MATSCIENCE, Madras, at Mysore. A similar conference, on Mathematics in Medicine and Biology' was conducted, at Bangalore in 1974. Encouraged by its success and the need for such interdisciplinary conference to highlight the ro1e of mathematics in tackling problems in the social, economic and life-sciences felt by experts in different professions, this second symposium was inaugurated on 4th March, 1977 at Mysore. The inaugural address
traced the 'development of Queueing theory from simple observations of human systems by Professor D.G.Kendall and others'. The necessity to modify 'conceptual basis of probability theory in treating systems' was observed. The need for interdisciplinary seminars for bringing up innovative ideas
in different branches of scientific pursuits was stressed upon during the inaugural address.
About 35 participants from different parts of the country - from different research organisations and teaching institutions participated in the symposium.
Sophisticated mathematical description of biological systems, clinical models, agricultural and economic problems were brought into focus by the brilliant expositions of various topics in these fields by the experts who assembled at Mysore. |
