dc.description.abstract This report is a REPRINT of the thesis submitted to the University of Manchester in 1951 for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy, by the author. The work was done in Manchester during the academic years 1949-1951, under the guideship of Professor M.S. Bartlett, and Mr. E. Moyal. The work has been stimulated mainly by 'so-called' fluctuation problem relating to the cascade theory of cosmic ray showers. The author started this work in collaboration with Professor H.J. Bhabha at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Bombay. A short account of their joint work has been given in Appendices I and II, for the sake of completeness, and also for the illustration of Scope of the problems that arise in a comprehensive statistical treatment of phenomena in physics. en_US
