IMSc Network usage Guidelines for users having their own laptops
A network of workstations and PC's provide facilities for numerical and symbolic manipulations, electronic mail and Internet access and other usage such as document-processing. At the heart of the network are Sun Sparc workstations SGI machines and pentiums. A Sun Enterprise 250 MHz dual CPU model (512) Operating on Solaris 2.7 (RAID 5) is configured as the Network File Server. The network includes Ultra Sparc machines as general purpose workstations. Heavy number-crunching applications and advanced graphics capabilities are provided by a twin-tower 2+2 cpu SGI Origin 200 (connected by a Cray Switch) based on the R 10000 chip and a couple of Sun Balde 1000 two cpu Ultra Sparc machines. Apart from Fortran and C libraries, symbolic manipulation packages like MACSYMA, MATHEMATICA and FORM are available in addition to graphics packages like SuperMongo (on Sun). IMSL, Numerical Recipes and MATLAB libraries are also available.
Printing services are handled by duplex laser printers on each floor, and a color laser printer. We have a colour scanner for easy conversion of hard-copy text and graphics into electronic copies.
